From 1 January 2021, any vehicle built from 1 January 1980 is not allowed to display white/silver-on-black numberplates, ending a rolling 40-year allowance that was unintentionally introduced 2015.

Until 2015, only pre-1973 built vehicles were allowed to display the white/silver-on-black plates. Any built from 1 January 1973-on had to display black-on-white front and black-on-yellow rear plates.

Vehicles that had already become old enough before the rule change can continue to display white/silver-on-black plates.

European Union number plates

From 1 January 2021, the fitting of number plates with the European Union symbol was no longer allowed, though vehicles already carrying them could and can continue to do so.
